In this tutorial, we will take our first steps into creating novel interactive data visualisation using the Processing toolkit. Processing is a Java-based language that takes away much of the boilerplate code necessary for vanilla Java. We will start with a very simple example, and gradually work our way towards more complicated linked views. In principle no programming experience is necessary, but some exposure to any programming language would be very helpful. Places for the tutorial are limited. Data analysis has been automated more and more in the last few decades. Advances in machine learning and statistics make it possible to gain a lot of information from large datasets. But are we starting to rely too much on those algorithms alone? In this talk, Jan Aerts will highlight some issues with automated data analysis in general, as well as applied to biology specifically. He will elaborate on different aspects in the field of data visualization (the data, the human, and the combination of the two) and how it can help us to bring data analysis to the next level. |
